How to Spot Energy Loss Around Your Windows This Winter

When temperatures drop in Madison, your windows do more than frame the snowy view. They either help keep the heat in, or they quietly let it leak out.

If your energy bills are climbing or you’re still layering up indoors, your windows could be part of the problem. Here’s how to recognize signs of energy loss around your windows, and what you can do about it.

1. You Feel Drafts or Cold Air

One of the most obvious signs of a window problem is a noticeable draft. If you walk past a window and feel a chill—or worse, a breeze—there’s a good chance the seals or frames aren’t doing their job.

Try this quick test:
On a windy day, hold a candle or lighter near the window’s edges. If the flame flickers, air is getting through.

2. Your Heating Bill Keeps Going Up

Madison winters already come with higher energy costs, but if your utility bill is unusually high compared to last year, or spikes suddenly, heat may be escaping through inefficient windows.

Over time, worn-out seals, poor insulation, or older single-pane glass can force your furnace to work overtime.

3. There’s Condensation or Frost Between Panes

While some window condensation is normal (especially on the inside), moisture trapped between double- or triple-pane glass means the insulating seal has failed. That allows heat to escape and cold air to creep in.

This often means the window needs to be replaced, not just resealed.

4. The Frames Feel Cold to the Touch

If your window frames or sashes feel freezing in January, that’s a sign they’re conducting cold air into your home. Modern energy-efficient windows are designed to reduce thermal transfer—keeping the cold outside where it belongs.

5. Your Windows Are Just… Old

Windows don’t last forever. If yours are more than 15–20 years old, they may be far less efficient than today’s models. Replacing them isn’t just about comfort—it’s one of the best long-term investments for your home.

What You Can Do

If you’re seeing signs of energy loss this winter, it might be time for:

  • A professional inspection
  • Re-sealing or weatherstripping
  • Full window replacement (if damage is significant or long-term)
