Stoughton gutters usually come with a fascia problem attached. On a house that has carried gutters for a hundred years, the wood behind them has been wet more times than anyone counted — and hanging new aluminium on soft fascia is the most common shortcut in this trade.
Four things that make gutter work on a century home different from a subdivision.
A century of water
By the time gutters are visibly failing on an old house, the fascia behind them is usually soft in places. New gutter screwed into rotten wood holds for a season or two. We open it up, replace what has gone, and price that at the estimate rather than after.
How these houses were designed
Older Stoughton homes often have substantial overhangs, which is good for the walls and complicated for gutters — longer brackets, more leverage, and more load on the fascia than a shallow modern eave puts on it.
What belongs on these houses
K-style is a modern profile. On a period Stoughton home half-round reads correctly in a way K-style does not, even to people who could not name the difference. It costs more and on the right house it is worth it.
Steep roofs, old attics
Steep pitch and under-ventilated attics produce ice damming every February, and ice load on a gutter hung from century-old fascia is what finally pulls it off. The gutter is the symptom. The ventilation is the cause.
New seamless systems, guards, drainage, and the repairs that are worth doing versus the ones that aren’t.
Rotted fascia replaced before anything is hung. On these houses this is frequently the larger half of the job.
In aluminium or copper, formed on site. The correct profile for a period home.
Where the architecture does not call for half-round and budget matters.
Longer brackets properly specified for the overhang and the load.
Where there is real tree cover. We will tell you honestly if your lot does not need them.
Extensions and underground drains to get water away from an old foundation.
Fascia is quoted at the estimate once we can probe behind the existing gutter. On a house of this age, a gutter quote with no fascia allowance at all is a change order waiting to happen.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

On a century home, usually some of it. By the time gutters are failing, the wood behind them has been repeatedly wet for decades and there are soft spots. Screwing new aluminium into rotten fascia holds for a season or two and then fails in exactly the same place. We probe it at the estimate and quote what we find.
It is a rounded gutter profile rather than the modern K-style. On a period Stoughton home it reads correctly in a way K-style does not — most people cannot name the difference and can see it. It costs meaningfully more. On the right house it is worth it, and on a plainer house we will tell you K-style is fine.
Ice load is usually the final straw rather than the cause. What lets go is the fascia, which on an old house has been softening for years. The ice is what finds the weakness. Fixing the gutter without correcting the attic ventilation producing the ice dams means the same thing happens again.
Depends entirely on your lot. In the older parts of Stoughton with mature trees, yes, and the type matters — cheap screens fill with maple seed and become the clog. On an open lot with young landscaping they are frequently unnecessary and we would rather say so.
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. Gutters make the resulting damage worse when they are full. The real fix is ventilation and insulation, which we also do.
