Window Replacement in Fitchburg, WI

Window replacement in Fitchburg WI is often the highest-return exterior project on the house, and the reason is the 1970s ranch. Aluminum frames conduct cold straight through the metal, so the frame itself is a heat leak regardless of what the glass does. If you get frost on the frame in January, that is what you are looking at.

Local conditions

What we find in Fitchburg windows

The 1970s stock and the additions produce two very different sets of problems on the same house.

1970s aluminum

The frame is the problem

Aluminum conducts heat, so the frame itself bleeds warmth no matter how good the glass is. Condensation and frost on the frame in January is the diagnostic, and these are the single highest-return replacements we do in Fitchburg.

Picture windows

The big one in the living room

1970s ranches almost always have one large fixed picture window, often with narrow operables flanking it. It is a lot of glass area in one place, which means it is where the heat loss concentrates and where a replacement is most noticeable.

Additions

Different brand, different age

Windows in an addition are a different make and a different vintage from the original house. They fail on their own schedule, which is why Fitchburg homes rarely need all their windows at once the way a single-build home does.

Patio doors

The draughtiest opening

Original sliding patio doors from the 1970s and 80s are usually the worst-performing opening in the house by a wide margin. If you are doing part of the house, this is often where the money goes furthest.

Window Services In Fitchburg, WI

Whole-house replacement, single-opening swaps, and the structural work that sometimes comes with them.

Full-Frame Replacement

Frame out to the rough opening. Usually the right call on 1970s aluminum, because the frame is the thing that is failing.

Insert Replacement

New unit inside a sound existing frame. Faster and cheaper where the frame genuinely is sound — often the case in newer additions.

Picture window replacement

Large fixed units and flanking operables, flashed and sealed as one assembly.

Patio & entry doors

Usually the highest-return single replacement on a 1970s Fitchburg house.

Egress windows

Code-compliant basement egress, including cutting and window well installation.

Phased planning

Because your addition windows and your original windows are on different clocks, we will sequence rather than quoting everything at once.

Details that matter

Full-frame vs insert on a Fitchburg house

The answer usually differs between the original house and the addition, which is why one blanket quote for the whole home is a warning sign.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Fitchburg Window Questions

Answered by Experts

Almost always aluminum frames, which are extremely common on Fitchburg’s 1970s stock. Aluminum conducts heat, so the frame is a thermal bridge straight to the outside regardless of how good the glass is. No amount of caulking or film fixes it — the frame itself has to go, which means full-frame replacement rather than an insert.

On a Fitchburg house with additions, often not. Your original windows and your addition windows are different makes of different ages, and they are on different clocks. We would rather sequence it — worst openings first — than sell you a whole-home package where half the units have ten good years left.

Usually the sliding patio door if you have an original one, then the large picture window. Those two are where the heat loss concentrates on a 1970s ranch, and the difference is noticeable in a way that replacing a small bedroom window is not.

Fitchburg is in climate zone 6, so look for a U-factor at or below roughly 0.27 for ENERGY STAR qualification in this zone. Lower is better in a heating-dominated climate.

If it is being used or permitted as a sleeping room, yes. It is a code and safety requirement, not an upgrade, and it needs a permit — from the City of Fitchburg, even if your mail comes from Madison.
