Waunakee Roofing Company Built for Open-Ground Wind Exposure

We are a Waunakee roofing company with 33 completed jobs in the 53597 ZIP, and the thing that sets this market apart is what is not here: tree cover. Waunakee sits on open ground north of the lakes with farmland on three sides and young landscaping in most subdivisions. Wind arrives at your roof having been slowed by nothing.

Local conditions

Why Waunakee roofs fail at the edges

Wind pressure on a roof is not uniform. It concentrates at the perimeter and the ridge, which is exactly where the shortcuts get taken.

The ridge

First to go

Ridge cap sits at the highest-pressure line on the roof and it is the piece most often installed with the wrong fastener length or too few of them. On a Waunakee roof the ridge is almost always the first thing that lifts, and losing it opens the field beneath to everything that follows.

Rake edges

The missing starter

Everyone puts a starter strip along the eave. Far fewer run one up the rake edges, which is where wind gets under a shingle and peels a course. It costs very little material and it is the single biggest difference between a roof that survives a straight-line wind event and one that does not.

Nailing pattern

Four nails or six

Manufacturers specify a six-nail pattern for high-wind warranty coverage on most architectural shingles. Four is faster and it is what a lot of roofs got. On open ground that difference shows up in year eight rather than never.

Sealing

Cold-weather installs

Shingles rely on a heat-activated sealant strip to bond course to course. A roof installed in cold weather may not seal until the following summer, and an unsealed roof through a Wisconsin winter on an exposed lot is a liability. Hand-sealing is the fix and it is a line item worth asking about.

Roofing Services in Waunakee, WI

Residential and commercial, across Madison, Dane County, & Southern Wisconsin.

Roof Replacement

Full tear-off, six-nail pattern, starter at eaves and rakes. Specified for the exposure rather than to the minimum.

High-wind shingle systems

Shingles carry wind ratings under ASTM testing. On an exposed Waunakee lot the rating is worth paying attention to.

Ridge & edge repair

Lifted ridge cap and peeled rake courses. Frequently a repair rather than a replacement if caught early.

Wind damage claims

Documented free inspection for your insurer, including the broken seals that do not show from the ground.

Ice dam & ventilation

Balanced intake and exhaust. The fix for ice damming is almost never more shingles.

Metal roofing

26-gauge standing seam with concealed fasteners. No individual pieces for wind to catch.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Waunakee Roofing Questions

Answered by Experts

Usually exposure plus fastening. Waunakee lots vary a lot in how sheltered they are — a house on the open north or west edge with young landscaping takes wind that a house two streets in does not. Combine that with a four-nail pattern and no rake starter and you get a roof that sheds shingles in ordinary weather.

The rake is the sloped edge of the roof at the gable end. A starter strip along it gives the first course something sealed to bond to, so wind cannot get underneath and peel the course back. Everyone runs starter along the eave. Far fewer run it up the rakes, and on an exposed Waunakee lot that omission is the most common reason a roof fails early.

Two more fasteners per shingle, and on most architectural products six is what the manufacturer requires for their high-wind warranty to apply. Four goes on faster. On a sheltered lot you may never notice. On open ground north of the lakes you will, eventually.

Yes, and it is issued by the Village of Waunakee rather than a city department — Waunakee is a village, and its process is separate from Madison’s and from Dane County. We pull it as part of the job.

Yes, with a caveat worth understanding. Shingles bond using a heat-activated sealant strip, and in cold weather that strip may not activate until the following summer. On an exposed lot, going through a winter unsealed is a real risk. We hand-seal on cold-weather installs and we will tell you when that is necessary.

Frequently, and it is under-claimed because it does not look like much. A shingle that was lifted and set back down with the seal broken looks intact from the ground and will blow off in the next event. That is storm damage, and it is worth documenting when it happens rather than after the roof opens up.
