Window replacement in Waunakee WI has a specification most homeowners are never shown. Everyone talks about U-factor, which measures heat loss through the glass. On an exposed lot the number that matters as much is air infiltration — how much air the window leaks under pressure — because a Waunakee house spends the winter with wind pushing against one whole side of it.
Pressure changes how a window behaves, and it exposes installation shortcuts that a sheltered house would hide for decades.
The rating nobody quotes
Windows carry an air leakage rating alongside the U-factor, measured under pressure. On a sheltered lot the difference between a good and a poor number is academic. On the windward side of a Waunakee house it is the difference between a room you can use in January and one you cannot.
Where the leak actually is
Most draught around a window is not through the window — it is around it, through an unsealed or poorly insulated gap between the frame and the framing. A high-performance window installed without sealing the rough opening properly performs like a cheap one. This is the most common installation shortcut there is.
Water at the sill
Sustained wind forces rain up and under the sill and around the frame. Sill pan flashing and a proper drainage path are what stop it. A lot of windows in this area went in without either, and the damage shows as soft framing below the sill years later.
Sticking and whistling
Casements on the windward side take sustained load on the hinge and lock hardware. Whistling in a gust and a sash that no longer closes flush are both signs of pressure fatigue rather than age.
Whole-house replacement, single-opening swaps, and the structural work that sometimes comes with them.
Frame out to the rough opening. The only way to correct sill flashing and air sealing that was never done right.
New unit in a sound frame. Faster and cheaper, and we will say when the frame genuinely is sound.
The part that decides how your window actually performs. Foamed and sealed rather than stuffed with fibreglass.
A drainage path under the window so wind-driven rain leaves rather than sitting in the framing.
Wind and debris damage to glass and screens, documented for your claim.
Code-compliant basement egress, including cutting and window well installation.
Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program has historically offered rebates on qualifying high-efficiency windows. Availability and amounts change annually, so confirm current program terms before counting on them.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Almost always the rough opening rather than the window. The gap between the window frame and the house framing has to be sealed and insulated properly — foamed, not stuffed with fibreglass, which does nothing to stop air movement. A high-performance window installed over an unsealed opening performs like a cheap one, and on a Waunakee windward wall you feel it.
It measures how much air a window lets through under pressure, and it appears on the same label as the U-factor. On a sheltered lot the difference between a good and a poor rating barely registers. On the exposed side of a Waunakee house it decides whether the room is usable in January. Ask for the number — most quotes do not volunteer it.
More often the flashing. Wind-driven rain gets forced up under the sill, and what stops it reaching your framing is a sill pan with a drainage path. A lot of windows around here went in without one. Replacing the window without correcting that just puts a new window over the same problem.
Not necessarily. On an exposed Waunakee lot the windward elevation is doing most of the suffering, and doing those openings first gets you most of the comfort improvement for a fraction of the cost. We will sequence it rather than quoting the whole house by default.
Waunakee is in climate zone 6, so look for a U-factor at or below roughly 0.27 for ENERGY STAR qualification in this zone. Lower is better in a heating-dominated climate — but on this lot, do not let the U-factor be the only number you compare.
