Window replacement in Stoughton WI starts with a question we will actually answer honestly: should these windows be replaced at all? Original wood sash on a century home is often repairable, frequently better made than what would replace it, and on some houses it is part of what makes the place worth owning.
On older housing stock the replace-or-restore question is real, and the answer is not always replace.
How these windows work
Original double-hungs counterbalance with iron weights on a cord inside a pocket in the frame. When the cord breaks the sash will not stay up, and people assume the window is finished. It is a cord, and it is repairable. The sash itself is usually old-growth wood that is more stable than anything sold today.
What actually fails
The putty holding the glass dries and falls out, and the paint film breaks down. Both are maintenance items rather than failures. A sash that has been maintained can be well past a century old and still sound.
The efficiency answer
A repaired original sash with a good exterior storm window performs far closer to a modern double-pane than most people expect, at a fraction of the cost. On a historic Stoughton home it is frequently the better decision, financially and otherwise.
Being honest about it
Rot through the sill or lower rail, frames racked out of square, or a house where the originals are long gone anyway. Then replacement is right, and the thing that matters is matching the sightlines and proportions so the house still reads correctly.
Whole-house replacement, single-opening swaps, and the structural work that sometimes comes with them.
We tell you whether your originals are worth keeping before we quote anything. Sometimes the answer costs us the job.
Where rot or racking makes restoration impractical. Frame out to the rough opening, sightlines matched.
Where the frame is sound and the sash is gone. Faster and less expensive.
Broken cords, missing weights and failed hardware on original double-hungs.
Exterior storms over sound originals — often the best performance per dollar on a century home.
Code-compliant basement egress, including cutting and window well installation.
Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program has historically offered rebates on qualifying high-efficiency windows. Availability and amounts change annually, so confirm current program terms before counting on them.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Almost certainly not for that reason. Original double-hungs counterbalance with iron weights on a cord inside the frame, and when the cord breaks the sash drops. Replacing a sash cord is inexpensive and the window is otherwise fine — the wood in an original Stoughton sash is usually old-growth and more stable than anything you could buy to replace it.
Often, and we will tell you when they are even though it costs us a larger job. A sound original sash that has been reglazed, paired with a good exterior storm window, performs far closer to a modern double-pane than most people expect and costs a fraction of replacement. If your sills are rotted or the frames have racked, that changes — then replacement is genuinely the right call.
It can. Stoughton has designated historic areas, and visible changes to street-facing elevations may need review. It affects what you can install more than whether you can do the work at all. We check your address at the estimate rather than after materials are ordered.
Sightlines and proportion. The visible width of the frame and the position of the meeting rail are what your eye reads, and a stock replacement with fat frames in an opening sized for slim originals makes a century home look wrong even to people who cannot say why. Matching those is worth more than the brand on the sticker.
If it is being used or permitted as a sleeping room, yes. It is a code and safety requirement rather than an upgrade, and it needs a permit from the City of Stoughton.
