Cottage Grove Siding Contractors for Homes, Garages & Shops

On a Cottage Grove property the siding question usually involves more than one building. House, detached garage, maybe a shop — and they were almost never sided at the same time, in the same product, in the same colour. Deciding whether to unify them is the actual conversation, and most contractors never raise it.

Local conditions

What Cottage Grove siding runs into

The Village and the Town produce two different sets of problems, and one of them barely exists elsewhere.

Multiple buildings

The Town problem

House sided in 1998, garage in 2006, shop in whatever was cheap that year. Three products, three colours, three ages of fading. Doing them together costs meaningfully less per square foot than doing them separately, and it is the only way the property reads as one place.

Steel on outbuildings

A different material

Shops and barns are frequently clad in steel panel rather than residential siding. It is repairable panel by panel, which residential siding largely is not, and a dented or torn section does not mean the whole building.

1990s–2010s vinyl

The Village stock

Builder-grade vinyl reaching end of life across the subdivisions. Wisconsin’s temperature swing makes it move more than the fastening allowed for, so you get wavy runs and cracked corners worst on south and west elevations.

Exposure on acreage

Open ground

Town properties sit on open ground with less shelter than a built-out subdivision, so the windward elevation takes more than it would in the Village. On those walls, steel or fiber cement is worth pricing even if vinyl goes elsewhere.

Siding services in Cottage Grove

Full re-sides, partial replacement, and the repair work that’s usually hiding behind the old siding.

Whole-property siding

House, garage and outbuildings quoted together. Cheaper per square foot and the only way to get a consistent result.

James Hardie fiber cement

The most durable option for this climate. Will not crack in freeze-thaw and holds colour.

LP SmartSide engineered wood

Real wood texture with much better impact resistance than vinyl.

Steel panel repair & replacement

On shops and barns. Panel-by-panel repair where the rest of the building is sound.

Insulated vinyl

Lower cost with an insulation backer that adds R-value and stiffens the panel.

Soffit, fascia & sheathing

Inspected and replaced where failed. We do not cover rot.

Details that matter

One building or all of them

On a multi-structure property this is the decision that most affects both the price and the result.

Pricing

What siding costs in Cottage Grove

House ranges plus outbuilding work, which most quotes leave out entirely.

Option

Best for

Range

Insulated vinyl

Budget-conscious full replacement

$13,000–$26,000

James Hardie fiber cement, house

Longest life in this climate

$25,000–$48,000

Steel panel, outbuilding

Shop or barn walls

$4–$9 / sq ft

Detached garage siding

Typical two-car

$3,000–$8,000

Doing the house and outbuildings in one project shares setup, staging and disposal across all of them. Quoted separately a year apart, the same work costs noticeably more and will not match.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Cottage Grove Siding Questions

Answered by Experts

Almost always, and the reason is money as much as appearance. Setup, staging and disposal get shared, so the per-square-foot cost drops. Done two years apart you pay for mobilisation twice and the colours will not match anyway, because the first set will have weathered.

Usually yes. Steel panel is installed in individual sheets and a damaged section can be replaced without touching the rest of the building — which is a real advantage over residential siding, where a partial replacement almost never matches. If the fastening and framing are sound, section repair is the right call.

Probably not, and it is better to hear that before than after. Vinyl fades by exposure, so twenty years of sun on the other walls means new panels in the same colour code read differently. If it is a storm claim, ask your adjuster about matching provisions in your policy.

Steel, then fiber cement, then engineered wood, then vinyl. On open acreage the windward elevation takes real load, and it is worth pricing a better material on that wall even if vinyl goes on the sheltered sides. Most contractors will not offer a mixed specification unless you ask.

On anything built before about 1990, sometimes, especially at the bottom courses and around windows. We price sheathing replacement as a known line item at the estimate rather than surprising you once the wall is open.
