Here is the most commonly missed money in a Cottage Grove storm claim: the detached garage, the shop and the pole barn. Standard homeowners policies carry separate coverage for other structures, and hail that hit your house hit those too. Most inspections never leave the driveway.
Four things, and three of them are not the house.
The coverage nobody reads
Most homeowners policies include a separate limit for detached structures — garages, sheds, barns, fences — typically expressed as a percentage of your dwelling coverage. You are paying for it whether or not you claim on it. If hail damaged the house it damaged the outbuildings, and they should be in the scope.
Different evidence
Hail on a metal roof does not knock granules loose. It leaves dents and dimples that are only visible in raking light, early or late in the day, at a low angle. An adjuster on site at noon may genuinely not see it. Documentation has to be shot when the light shows it.
Bruising
Granules knocked loose, mat bruised underneath, invisible from the ground and no immediate leak. Test squares marked and photographed properly or the damage is invisible to the claim.
The rest of the property
On an acreage property the fencing, gutters and screens on every structure are part of the same event. Reopening a closed claim to add them is much harder than including them once.
Emergency response first, then a documented claim and a proper repair — across every exterior trade.
House, detached garage, shop, barn and fencing. We walk all of it, not just what is visible from the drive.
Metal panel hail damage photographed at the time of day the light actually reveals it.
We will look at your policy’s detached-structure limit with you so you know what is available before you file.
On site, for every structure. This is where outbuildings get into the scope or do not.
When a scope covers the house and skips the barn, we document and file for the difference.
If we do not think you have a claim, we will tell you. That is a shorter conversation than a denied one.
Detached structures are normally part of the same claim and the same deductible rather than a separate one, subject to your other-structures limit. Check your declarations page. Be cautious of any contractor offering to cover your deductible — in Wisconsin that creates legal exposure for you as well as them.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Most homeowners policies include a separate limit for other structures, commonly expressed as a percentage of your dwelling coverage. You are paying for that coverage whether or not you ever use it. If a storm damaged your house, the outbuildings on the same property almost certainly took the same hail, and they belong in the same claim.
Normally no — damage from a single storm event is typically one claim with one deductible, with outbuilding damage paid against your other-structures limit. Policies vary, so check your declarations page, but you should not assume a separate deductible applies before someone tells you it does.
Light angle, mostly. Hail on metal panel leaves dents and dimples rather than granule loss, and at midday they are close to invisible. Early morning or late afternoon raking light makes them obvious. That is when the documentation needs to be shot, and it is a real reason inspections get scheduled for particular times of day.
Frequently, and it is the most common supplement we file in Cottage Grove. If the outbuildings took the same storm and we can document it, that is a scope revision rather than a new claim. Do it before the claim closes — reopening is much harder.
It depends on your policy, and many carriers set a window of roughly one year from the date of loss. The clock runs from the storm date rather than from when you noticed the damage.
No. You choose who works on your home. Insurers can suggest a preferred vendor, but the decision is yours — and a vendor who does not do metal outbuilding work has no reason to raise it.
