If water is coming in right now, call. Fitchburg is our closest market at seven miles — nearer to our shop than much of Madison is. That matters most in the hour after something goes wrong, and it is the reason we can usually be on a Fitchburg roof the same afternoon rather than the next morning.
What kind of roof you have changes what has gone wrong and how it gets stabilised.
Ponding, not holes
A membrane roof rarely fails from a hole. It fails because water ponds at a low spot and works through a seam or a fastener. That means the entry point is often nowhere near the drip, and a tarp is not always the right stabilisation — sometimes a seam patch is.
The familiar failures
Missing shingles, lifted courses, failed pipe boots and flashing that has pulled loose at a chimney. Same as anywhere, and tarping works the way you would expect.
Where they meet
A leak at the line between your low-slope addition and the steep roof above it is the most common Fitchburg emergency call. It usually appears on the addition ceiling, which sends people looking at the wrong roof.
1970s shallow pitch
Shallow roofs hold snow longer, which gives it more time to melt and refreeze at the eave. Steam removal, never chipping — chipping damages the shingles you are trying to protect.
Seven miles out. Steep systems tarped, low-slope systems patched or sealed depending on the failure.
Seam and fastener failures on EPDM and TPO. A tarp on a flat roof is often the wrong answer.
On a mixed-system house the entry point is frequently on a different roof from the drip. We trace it.
The most common Fitchburg emergency. Often a repair rather than a replacement.
Steam, never chipping.
Photographed before anything is covered, because the adjuster cannot assess what is under a tarp.
If the damage came from a storm event, emergency mitigation is frequently covered by your policy. Keep the receipt and photograph everything before anything gets covered.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Not necessarily, and this catches people out. On a mixed-system house the water frequently enters at the tie-in where the steep roof meets the low-slope one, then runs down and shows up on the addition ceiling. Repairing the sunroom roof when the leak is at the tie-in is how people pay twice.
You can, and often you should not. A tarp on a low-slope roof traps water rather than shedding it, and the fastenings needed to hold it down create new penetrations. If the failure is a seam or a fastener, a proper patch is faster, cheaper and more effective than a tarp. We will tell you which applies when we see it.
Faster than anywhere else we work. Seven miles from our shop on S. Stoughton Road, which is closer than much of Madison. Same-day and usually within a couple of hours. After a major storm the queue is longer because everyone calls at once, and we will give you a real time.
Put a bucket underneath and puncture it in the centre with a screwdriver to drain it in a controlled way. A ceiling that collapses on its own does far more damage than a small hole you made on purpose.
No. Wet roofs are how people get seriously hurt, and on a low-slope roof an improperly placed tarp makes the ponding worse. Contain the water inside and let us handle the roof.
A tarp is not — it buys weeks, not months. A properly executed membrane seam repair frequently is, and we will tell you honestly which one you have got rather than booking a replacement you may not need.
