The uneven problem
Vinyl from this era fades unevenly by exposure. Replacing one elevation almost never matches, even with the same product code, because the remaining sides have twenty years of UV on them. This is the most common surprise in a partial siding job here.

Original wood or hardboard, often under a later layer. Hardboard from this era absorbs water at the butt joints and fails from the inside out, which is why it looks fine until it doesn’t.
Match or differentiate
When every house on the block is the same, siding is the cheapest way to make yours read as different — or to keep it consistent if you are thinking about resale. There is no wrong answer, but it is worth deciding on purpose rather than by default.

You can, and you should know going in that it probably will not match. Vinyl from the late 90s and early 2000s fades by exposure, so twenty years of sun on the other three sides means new panels in the same colour code will read differently. If it is a storm claim, ask your adjuster about matching provisions in your policy.
That is genuinely your call and worth making on purpose. Changing material and colour is the cheapest way to make a house in a uniform subdivision stand out. If resale is the priority, staying broadly consistent with the street is the safer play. We will show you both.
Fiber cement and engineered wood both handle freeze-thaw better than vinyl because they move less with temperature. Steel is the most impact-resistant if hail is your main concern. The honest answer depends on your budget and how long you plan to stay.
Vinyl becomes brittle in deep cold and we avoid installing it below roughly 40 degrees. Fiber cement and steel are less affected. We schedule around it rather than forcing a job that will look wrong in spring.
