Two things happen to DeForest siding that do not happen in a milder climate. Snow piles against the bottom courses and sits there for months, and the north elevation never dries out properly between November and April. Both are solved at install, by details most quotes do not mention.
Four things, and two of them come down to a clearance measurement at the bottom of the wall.
Months, not days
Siding buried in snowpack is siding held against moisture at freezing temperatures for weeks at a time. Fiber cement and engineered wood both require a minimum clearance above grade for exactly this reason, and installing to the ground voids most manufacturer warranties. On a flat DeForest lot where snow drifts and plows pile it, that clearance matters more than the spec sheet implies.
The bottom courses
Meltwater refreezing at the base of a wall works into any unsealed cut edge. Cut ends of fiber cement need sealing and it is one of the first things skipped on a fast install. You will not see it for five years and then the bottom course starts to go.
It never dries
The north wall gets minimal sun for months, so it stays damp longer after every thaw. That produces algae and mildew streaking that homeowners mistake for siding failure when it is usually surface growth. It also means the drainage plane behind the siding matters more on that wall than anywhere else.
Off the roof, onto the wall
Snow releasing off a roof plane onto siding below — over a lower roof, a bay or an entry — does real damage over years. Snow guards protect siding as well as people.
Full re-sides, partial replacement, and the repair work that’s usually hiding behind the old siding.
Handles freeze-thaw better than vinyl and holds colour. Installed with proper grade clearance and sealed cut edges.
Real wood texture, good impact resistance, same clearance requirements as fiber cement.
Lower cost with an insulation backer that adds R-value and stiffens the panel.
Where a north wall succeeds or fails. It is the thing doing the work when the face stays damp.
Where snow contact and splash have got into the base of a wall.
Inspected and replaced where failed. We do not cover rot.
Grade clearance and sealed cut edges are not line items — they are how the job is supposed to be done. If a quote is materially below these ranges, it is worth asking what clearance they intend to install to.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Manufacturers specify a minimum clearance above grade and above hard surfaces like decks and walkways, and it exists precisely because of what happens in a climate like this. Siding buried in snowpack for months is held against moisture at freezing temperatures, and installing to the ground voids most warranties. On a flat DeForest lot where snow drifts and gets plowed into piles, that clearance is not a technicality.
Usually not — it is generally algae or mildew growth, because that wall gets almost no sun between November and April and never fully dries between thaws. It cleans. What is worth checking at the same time is whether there is a proper drainage plane behind that wall, because a north elevation is where a missing one shows up first.
On fiber cement, yes, and it is one of the first things skipped on a fast install. Water works into an unsealed cut edge, freezes, and opens it up a fraction more each cycle. You will not see anything for several years and then the bottom course starts to deteriorate. It takes minutes per cut and it is the difference between a twenty-year wall and a forty-year one.
Over years, yes. Snow releasing off a roof plane onto a wall, a bay or a lower roof carries real weight and does cumulative damage. Snow guards on the roof above solve it, and they protect people and gutters at the same time.
Vinyl becomes brittle in deep cold and we avoid installing it below roughly 40 degrees. Fiber cement and steel are less affected. We schedule around it rather than forcing a job that will look wrong in spring.
