Ice dam claims are the most misunderstood thing in DeForest. Homeowners assume winter damage is not covered, so they never file. In fact the water damage an ice dam causes is frequently covered — while fixing the ventilation problem that caused it usually is not. Knowing which side of that line you are on changes what you do next.
This is general guidance rather than a reading of your specific policy, and it is the framework most homeowners are missing.
Frequently covered
Water that backed up under shingles and came through your ceiling is sudden and accidental damage, and that is the kind of loss homeowners policies are built for. Drywall, insulation, paint, flooring and contents are the claimable part.
Usually not covered
Sealing attic bypasses, adding insulation and correcting intake ventilation is maintenance and improvement, and insurers generally will not pay for it. That is not a loophole — it is the standard distinction between damage and upkeep.
Two decisions, not one
You may well have a claim for the ceiling and no claim for the fix. Both are still worth doing, and treating them as one decision is how people end up either not filing at all or expecting the insurer to fund a ventilation project.
The summer side
DeForest gets the same storm systems as the rest of the county. Hail bruising is invisible from the ground and does not leak right away; wind breaks shingle seals without visibly moving anything. Both are documented the same way we document them anywhere.
Emergency response first, then a documented claim and a proper repair — across every exterior trade.
Roof, attic and interior. On a winter claim the attic is where the story is.
Photographed for your insurer, with the mechanism explained in terms an adjuster can scope.
What is claimable damage and what is maintenance, told plainly so you can plan both.
On site, with the documentation.
Stopping the water entry before the claim process even begins.
Documented whole-house, same as any of our markets.
Coverage varies by policy and carrier and nothing here is a substitute for reading yours. Be cautious of any contractor offering to cover your deductible — in Wisconsin that creates legal exposure for you as well as them.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

The damage often is; the cause usually is not. Water that backed up under your shingles and came through the ceiling is generally treated as sudden and accidental damage, which is what homeowners policies cover. Sealing attic bypasses and correcting ventilation is maintenance, and insurers generally will not fund it. Coverage varies by policy, so read yours — but do not assume winter damage is automatically excluded, because that assumption costs people real money.
If there is meaningful interior damage, usually yes. Photograph everything before you clean up, note the date, and get the attic inspected so the cause is documented alongside the damage. Then plan the ventilation work as a separate project, because that part is almost certainly yours.
Partly, and the distinction is worth pushing on. Ventilation correction genuinely is maintenance. The water that came through your ceiling is damage. If a scope has denied both together, it is reasonable to ask for the damage portion to be assessed on its own terms.
Yes, by steam. Never by chipping and never with salt — chipping damages the shingles you are trying to protect and salt corrodes flashing and kills whatever is planted below the eave. Steam melts the ice without harming the roof.
It depends on your policy, and many carriers set a window of roughly one year from the date of loss. The clock runs from when the damage occurred, which on a winter claim is why noting the date at the time matters.
No. You choose who works on your home. Insurers can suggest a preferred vendor, but the decision is yours.
