If water is coming through your ceiling right now, call. In DeForest a meaningful share of emergency calls happen in February rather than after a storm, and a winter emergency is handled differently from a summer one — you cannot tarp an ice dam, and the fastest way to make things worse is to start chipping at it.
Four things that are true in February and not in July.
The tool is steam
A tarp sheds water off a surface. An ice dam is water backing up underneath the shingles from below the ice, so there is nothing for a tarp to do. The fix is removing the ice with low-pressure steam so the water can drain.
The damage people do
Hammers, hatchets and ice picks take shingles and flashing with the ice, and they are how a leak becomes a replacement. Rock salt is worse — it corrodes flashing and fasteners and kills whatever is planted under the eave. Neither is a shortcut.
Not where it entered
Ice dam water enters at the eave and travels along the deck before it appears on a ceiling, often well inside the house. The stain does not tell you where the dam is.
The normal ones
Missing shingles, tree impact, failed pipe boots and storm damage. Tarped the way you would expect, same day, same as any of our markets.
Low-pressure steam that melts the ice without damaging shingles or flashing.
For storm damage and open roofs. Secured properly so it holds through the next system.
Following the water back to the entry point rather than repairing above the stain.
What to do in the first hour, on the phone, before we arrive.
Interior and exterior photographed, which matters on a winter claim.
Once the emergency is over, finding out why it happened.
If interior damage resulted, emergency mitigation is frequently claimable. Photograph everything before cleanup and keep the receipt. We will also tell you at the visit whether the underlying cause is a ventilation problem worth fixing before next winter.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Contain it inside — bucket under the drip, move what you can. If the ceiling is bulging, puncture it in the centre deliberately to drain it rather than waiting for it to let go. Photograph everything before you clean up, note the date, and call. Do not go outside and start chipping at the ice.
No, and anyone offering to has misunderstood the problem. A tarp sheds water off the top of a surface. Ice dam water is backing up underneath your shingles from below the ice, so a tarp has nothing to do. What works is removing the ice with steam so the water can drain properly.
Because you take shingles and flashing with it, and a leak becomes a roof replacement. Rock salt is worse — it corrodes flashing and fasteners and kills anything planted below the eave. Low-pressure steam melts the ice without touching the roof, which is why it is what we use.
Same-day for active water entry, usually within a few hours. We are 13 miles south. After a hard thaw the queue gets long because the whole area calls at once, and we triage by active water entry rather than by call order.
Quite possibly. Ice dam water enters at the eave and runs along the roof deck before finding a way through, so it frequently appears well inside the house. Where the stain is does not tell you where the dam is, which is why tracing it properly matters.
If nothing changes, yes. Ice dams are caused by heat escaping into the attic, and that does not fix itself. We handle the emergency first and then, once things have calmed down, we will look at the attic and tell you what it would take to stop it happening again.
