A gutter full of ice weighs several times what the same gutter full of water does, and in DeForest it can carry that load for weeks. That is what pulls gutters off houses here — not debris, not age, but a February that never quite thawed. Hanger type and spacing matter more than gutter size does.
Four things, and the first one is why most of them fail.
The real load
Ice is far heavier than the water it came from, and a packed gutter on a north elevation can hold that weight for weeks. Spike-and-ferrule fastening was never designed for it. Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia at tightened spacing are the baseline here, not an upgrade.
The impact load
Snow releasing off a roof plane lands on the gutter below it with force. On a steep roof or a metal one it will simply tear the run off the house. Snow guards above the run solve it and cost a fraction of replacing the gutter every few years.
What actually lets go
The gutter rarely fails. The wood behind it does, after years of ice load working at the fasteners. We probe the fascia before hanging anything and replace what has gone, because screwing new aluminium into soft fascia buys you a season.
The gutter is the symptom
Gutters do not cause ice dams — attic heat does. But a full or sagging gutter makes the resulting damage worse, and the ice load finishes off a run that was already weakened. The real fix is ventilation, and we will say so rather than selling you gutters.
New seamless systems, guards, drainage, and the repairs that are worth doing versus the ones that aren’t.
Screwed into the fascia at tightened spacing. The correct system for ice load and what we install by default.
Replacing old spike-and-ferrule fastening without necessarily replacing the gutter.
Above gutter runs on steep and metal roofs, where sliding snow is what tears them off.
Probed and replaced before anything is hung.
Formed on site to the exact run length. No seams means no seam leaks.
Fitted where you want it, with an honest explanation of what it does and does not solve.
Heat cable is available and we will fit it, and we will also tell you that it manages a symptom at a running cost every winter. On most houses the same money spent on attic ventilation is a permanent fix.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.![]()

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????![]()

Ice load on the wrong fastening. Ice weighs far more than the water it came from, and a packed gutter on a north elevation can carry that weight for weeks. Spike-and-ferrule fastening loosens under it, the fascia works around the spike, and eventually the run sags away. Converting to hidden hangers screwed into the fascia usually solves it without replacing the gutter itself.
Snow guards on the roof above the run. Snow releases off a steep or metal roof all at once and lands with real force — enough to tear a gutter off the house. Guards hold the snow on the roof so it melts in place rather than arriving in one piece. They cost far less than replacing the run every few years.
It treats a symptom. Heat cable keeps a channel open so meltwater drains instead of backing up, which is a reasonable stopgap where the real fix is impractical. It does not stop ice forming and it costs money to run all winter. We will fit it if you want it, and on most DeForest houses the same spend on attic ventilation solves the problem permanently.
No — bigger gutters hold more ice. What matters is how they are attached and whether snow is landing on them. On most DeForest homes correctly hung 5-inch with hidden hangers at tightened spacing is genuinely fine, and we will tell you so rather than upselling.
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. The real fix is ventilation and insulation, which we also do.
