Window Replacement in DeForest, WI

Most DeForest homeowners who call us about windows in January do not need windows. They have condensation or frost on the glass, they have assumed the windows have failed, and in a large share of cases the actual problem is humidity inside the house. We would rather diagnose that than sell you a package you did not need.

Local conditions

Where the water on your window is coming from

Three different problems that look nearly identical on a cold morning, and only one of them is the window.

On the inside of the glass

Usually humidity

Condensation on the room side means warm moist indoor air is meeting cold glass. That is a humidity problem far more often than a window problem — showers, cooking, humidifiers and a tightly sealed house with not enough air exchange. A better window raises the glass temperature and helps, but if your indoor humidity is high you will get condensation on almost anything.

Between the panes

That is the window

Fogging you cannot wipe off means the seal has failed and the insulating gas is gone. This one is genuinely a window problem, and depending on the frame it may be repairable by replacing the glass unit alone rather than the whole thing.

On the frame

Thermal bridging

Frost or water on the frame rather than the glass usually means the frame itself is conducting cold — most often aluminium. No amount of caulking fixes a frame that is a thermal bridge; it has to be replaced, which means full-frame rather than an insert.

Around the frame

The installation

Draught and frost at the edge of the trim points at the rough opening rather than the unit. The gap between frame and framing has to be sealed and insulated properly, and a good window over an unsealed opening performs like a cheap one.

Whole-house replacement, single-opening swaps, and the structural work that sometimes comes with them.

Condensation diagnosis

Working out whether you have a humidity problem, a seal failure or a frame problem. Free, and sometimes it ends the conversation.

Fogged glass replacement

Where the frame is sound, the glass unit alone can sometimes be replaced for far less.

Full-frame replacement

Frame out to the rough opening. The answer for aluminium frames and for openings that were never sealed properly.

Insert replacement

New unit in a sound existing frame. Faster and less expensive where the frame genuinely is sound.

Rough opening air sealing

Foamed and sealed rather than stuffed. This is what decides how a window actually performs.

Egress windows

Code-compliant basement egress, including cutting and window well installation.

I'm extremely impressed with the Exteriors company and their work. We had a strange door/lock issue, called MANY companies and the Exteriors Company was the only company willing to come and look at our door. They called me right back when I left a message, were on time for the appointment and did a wonderful job in fixing the problem. Tony and Andrew are the best! In addition to fixing the problem, they were extremely kind people, too. We need more of this in our world now. We are extremely grateful to have a working door again. Thank you! We will be using your company again and tell all of our friends about your services.

The Exteriors Company deserves 6 out of 5 ⭐ I cannot give them enough praise. I'll summarize here in case you don't want to read a lengthy review. The highlights were communication, quality of work, price, and customer service. I cannot wait to work with The Exteriors Company again. The Exteriors Company could teach a master class on contractor/customer interactions. If you need exterior work done, call The Exteriors Company! FOR REAL. LENGTHY REVIEW STARTS HERE: It took over a year and a half and meeting with 15 roofing companies to finally find the right company for my job: The Exteriors Company. My house has a modern/Frank Lloyd Wright kinda vibe - lots of different roof sections and pitches. A majority of the first 15 contractors that bid on my roof repair wanted to sell me a new roof. The problem with my roof was a design flaw and a new roof would have eventually led to more water in my house. This was confirmed by an architect. If you look at the before and after photo, you can see how ridiculous the design was. We had water coming into our house anytime it rained and when the snow melted. It was awful. We were lucky enough to have Ryan (the owner of The Exteriors Company) come look at our roof. The first thing he said after climbing on to the roof was, "You need to redo this whole area," confirming what we already knew. That was the first clue that we found a good roofing contractor. After talking in person and over email with Ryan and getting the contract for the project, we knew we found the right company. Ryan was so communicative. He reached out regularly through the repair process. We had four different teams (framing, roofing, siding and gutters) work on our repair. We were notified in advance when to expect each team. Then each team project manager reached out via text a day or two before and the day of their work. Each team was on time and did beautiful work. They were also tidy and I felt like they respected our home and property. Shout out to Taylor Paar and Scott Mack (roofing project manager and siding manager). Both these fellows came to meet with me and my husband to review the work that was done and to make sure everything was done to our liking. And to make sure we didn't have any concerns or questions. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible. The Exteriors Company very obviously cares deeply about the quality of their work and customer satisfaction. If I could give more than five stars, I would gladly do that. I wish more contractors/vendors followed the playbook that The Exteriors Company has perfected. JOB ???????? WELL ???????? DONE ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

DeForest Window Questions

Answered by Experts

Possibly not. If the water is on the room side of the glass and wipes off, that is condensation from indoor humidity meeting cold glass — and if it is happening on every window in the house, it is almost certainly humidity rather than a window problem. Better windows raise the glass temperature and help, but the underlying issue is moisture and air exchange. We will tell you which you have before quoting anything.

Try to wipe it. Condensation is on the surface and wipes away. A failed seal is fogging between the two panes where you cannot reach it, and it does not clear. The first is usually a house problem, the second is definitely a window problem.

Usually an aluminium frame acting as a thermal bridge — the metal conducts cold straight through to the inside. No amount of caulk or film fixes that, because the frame itself is the issue. It needs full-frame replacement rather than an insert, since an insert leaves the original frame in place.

Sometimes. If the frame and sash are sound and the manufacturer’s unit is still obtainable, replacing the insulated glass alone costs considerably less than a full window. It is worth checking before anyone quotes you a package.

If it is being used or permitted as a sleeping room, yes. It is a code and safety requirement rather than an upgrade, and it needs a permit from the Village of DeForest.
