Most roofing problems in DeForest arrive in February rather than July. This is the north end of our service area, on flat open ground, and the north-facing plane of your roof can hold snow from December through March without ever seeing enough sun to melt it cleanly. That is where ice dams come from, and it is not a shingle problem.
Four things that make ice damming worse here than on a sheltered Madison street, and none of them are about shingle quality.
Snow that never melts cleanly
A south-facing roof gets solar gain even in January and sheds snow gradually. A north-facing plane in DeForest can hold pack for three months, melting only from underneath where attic heat reaches it. That meltwater runs down to the cold eave and refreezes. It is the classic ice dam mechanism and north elevations are where we find it.
The actual cause
Snow melts from below because heat is escaping into the attic — bypasses around light fixtures and plumbing stacks, insufficient insulation, or intake ventilation that was blocked when someone added insulation. Replacing shingles without fixing that gives you a new roof with the same ice dams. We will say so at the estimate.
What code actually requires
Wisconsin requires a self-adhering ice barrier membrane at the eaves, extending a specified distance up the slope past the exterior wall line. On a low-pitch roof or a deep overhang, the code minimum may not reach far enough for your particular house. It is worth extending, and it costs very little at install.
On metal, and on steep asphalt
Snow releasing off a metal roof comes off all at once and with force — over a doorway, a walkway, a deck or a gutter. Snow guards are not decorative, and a metal roof installed over an entry without them is a genuine hazard here.

Almost certainly not on its own, and we would rather tell you that before you spend the money. Ice dams are caused by heat escaping into your attic, melting snow from underneath, and that meltwater refreezing at the cold eave. New shingles do not change any of that. The fix is sealing attic bypasses, getting the insulation right and making sure intake ventilation is not blocked.
The north-facing plane. It gets almost no solar gain between December and March, so the snow sits there for months melting only from below where your attic heat reaches it. South-facing roofs shed gradually through the winter and rarely dam. If your ice problem has a favourite elevation, that tells you what is going on.

If you have a metal roof that sheds over a doorway, a walkway, a deck or a gutter run, yes. Snow releases off metal all at once rather than gradually, and the load coming off a roof plane is substantial. It is a safety item more than a maintenance one.
It treats the symptom. Heat cable can keep a channel open so water drains rather than backing up, which is a reasonable stopgap on a house where the real fix is not practical. It does not stop the ice forming and it costs money to run every winter. We will fit it if you want it, and we will tell you honestly that ventilation is the better spend.
